The internet world is buzzing with the news that Comcast, America’s second-largest ISP, was hacked with services stopped.
Many people trying to log into Comcast have found a blank white screen with bold pink letters saying:
KRYOGENIKS EBK and DEFIANT RoXed COMCAST
SHOUTZ TO VIRUS Warlock elul21 coll1er seven and Slacker
Was Comcast just a big hacking target or was it a BitTorrent revenge attack as some speculated?
It is well known that Comcast has upset a large chunk of its customer base, even going so far as to block BitTorrent traffic and limit the use of popular Peer-2-Peer networks, which can be a form of hacker revenge.
There is a lot of speculation about who the culprits are as it is said that the prank was committed by two young hackers looking to make a name for themselves. There are also rumors that the group responsible for the break-in previously attacked Justin Timberlake and Hilary Duff, though this may only be speculation.
Concerns have been raised that hackers may have accessed customers ’email accounts, but it seems that they did not, and it seems that the hackers’ motivation was not any monetary gain, but rather a kind of revenge tactic.
This indicates the apparent ease with which hackers and virus senders can disrupt services. Think about it – if America’s second-largest ISP is at risk, what does that mean for you and me?
